Water in the Workplace
The water cooler has become a common backdrop in the American office. While they may represent a gathering place for gossip, coolers also provide quality drinking water for employees. But traditional bottled-water coolers are not keeping pace with the demand for "healthy water." The threat of microbiological and chemical contamination in drinking water is all too real for many facility managers. As more focus is given to environmental issues like the outbreaks of Cryptosporidium, waterborne pathogens and the by-products of chlorination, facility managers are taking a harder look at how and why their drinking water should be treated.
Water Risks: An Upstream Battle
Consider some facts. The American Journal of Public Health states that 35 percent of all reported gastrointestinal illnesses are water-related and preventable. Over a 26-month period, more than one in five U.S. community water systems of all sizes did not meet safe drinking water standards for microbial contamination, according to a recent report from the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Research Council.
The same report found that contaminated drinking water from public systems has caused nearly 600 reported outbreaks of waterborne diseases in the last 20 years. The Environmental Working Group found that more than 90 percent of major U.S. water utilities do not use available modern equipment and technology to remove contaminants.
Given that information, is it any surprise that the water flowing plentifully from your tap at your facility could hide unsafe levels of contaminants?
